   The first clip-ons, designed for elegant Victorian ladies who considered it a disgrace to poke holes in oneself (see our blog, 'Earrings: A Fashion That's Endured For Millennia'), were a simple screw-back fastening patented around 1894… fastened by tightening the screw against the back of the lobe to hold the earring in place… quite collectible!

   A more convenient and less fiddly design was the simple hinge clip, arriving on the market in the mid-1930s. This simple clip, as the name suggests, worked like a hinge to open and close the earrings and fasten them to the lobes… In later years a friction groove was often added to top of the clip to prevent slightly heavier earrings from slipping off…

   The 1950s saw a plethora of clip-on earring designs submitted to the patents office, of which one was the one we see most commonly today: the adjustable paddle clip with the spring bar on the hinge…

   There are many reasons why people choose to wear clip-on earrings over pierced earrings; allergies, skin sensitivities, damaged lobes or a fear of needles…

   …At the turn of the 20th century, when Victorian morals ruled the roost, and for a few decades after, pierced earrings were thought to be unrefined and even a bit crass, so the practice fell out of fashion for polite society. If someone were to wear earrings, they would opt for a screw-back option that allowed them to accessorize without having to—gasp!—pierce holes in their ears. The 1930s brought easier-to-wear hinged clip-ons, and by the 1950s, clip-on earrings came in a variety of backing styles and were popular among housewives and the high-fashion set alike.

Amy Kahn Russell.

Another one of Mom's necklaces. The designer is Amy Kahn Russell. I Googled, Amy Kahn Russell lavender freshwater pearl necklace. Nothing like it. I found a few freshwater pearl necklaces designed by her that were similar selling from $198 to $280. I have a confession to make. I came across the necklace in a tote of Mom's jewelry that I was going to take apart. It's a little "over the top" for my taste (it's also a very heavy piece). I think the small pearls and the faceted stones (I think they are quartz) would make beautiful necklaces (individually). I don't know what to think of the "spikes".
